Swallowing garlic

garlic-5  Swallowing garlic sounds weird. It’s okay, I used to think the same. This is also because most people aren’t aware of garlic being a medicinal herb. Heck, even the Egyptians and Greeks were very fond of garlic. Once I gave it a try, I watched the benefits work within minutes. I finally decided to tell other people all about it. I’ll be honest, this is my first year skipping the flu during the winter season. I think I discovered the secret!

Garlic is often known as a cooking herb, and it is mostly ignored for also being a medicinal herb. Here’s a secret, sometimes garlic works better than antibiotics. Who would have known? Garlic can help keep both the immune system and the heart pretty content. Not only that, but researchers discovered garlic was used by the Egyptians and Greeks. For what? Well, some of them used them to stay strong in labor jobs, others used it for olympics. The truth is, they were right that garlic would help them be healthier, just not stronger.

My mother once explained to me how swallowing garlic could help my immune system. Plus, the benefits were endless. I finally decided to try it out last month. Within the first day, I felt more alert and healthier. I’ve also managed to escape the horrible flu this season, so far. About three weeks ago, my boyfriend had the beginning symptoms of the oncoming flu. You know, sore throat, migraines, runny nose. I had him swallow garlic for 3 days straight on top of detoxing. That means no sugar for a couple of days. It was completely gone within 2 days. He’s still flu-free and always tells me how much garlic makes a difference with his day.

Where can I find it?: Finding garlic is actually very easy. The problem is picking the right garlic head/bulb. Always ask someone that works at a grocery store if you don’t know how to tell if a fruit/vegetable is fresh instead of guessing. Guessing leads to money being wasted.

  • Garlic clove (1-2)

How to use: So, there are two different ways on how to swallow garlic. One, grab a clove or two from a garlic head, peel it, chop it into tiny little pieces, then chase it with water. Yes, you can chase it with orange juice if you want to disguise the taste. Two, grab a clove or two from a garlic head, peel it, put it into a bowl, add a tiny bit of water until it turns into a paste. Then, add lemon or lime with honey and quickly swallow it.

Tips: Garlic pills are ideal, except they take a bit more time to work. That’s not very ideal when you need immediate help on fighting the flu. Take 2 days to watch the difference. One day take a garlic pill, the next just the chopped garlic clove. Fresh chopped garlic gives a much bigger boost to work immediately. The fresher the food, the faster it works with your body. Swallowing garlic might be a bit weird at first because it has a bit of spice when chopped. What I like to do to not taste the spiciness of the garlic, I take a sip of water, then put the garlic in my mouth, and finally swallow it all. It goes down way easier like that.

  • Garlic should be avoided if you have low blood pressure
  • People should also avoid this method after surgery for 2 weeks, bleeding disorders, and digestion problems(irritable or gassy).

Yummy detox & infused water

Here’s the thing, there’s a good chance most people already have an idea of what I’m about to talk about. This is true if anyone has ever owned a Pinterest or a Tumblr. It is likely, for anyone with an Instagram to  have seen someone else post an aesthetic picture of their herb and fruit infused water. Cool. I am now giving you the opportunity to become that person if you want to. Do whatever pleases you, it’s your life, you know? This post is for people who want to detox, look good, and/or don’t really like drinking plain water. Since drinking water is important, might as well make it enjoyable to drink throughout the day, right? Not all herb and fruit infused drinks work as strong as the others when it comes to detoxing. The way I see it is, some are more for detox, the others are to keep you looking goooood. Heyyyy.

Here’s the thing, water is fucking good for you. Water really helps people flush out toxins. You know, the stuff that makes you feel uneasy(not healthy). Other benefits from drinking infused water include helping people maintain a positive mood, help the body to destroy fat, and aids the digestive system. If it makes any of you non-water drinkers feel better, there’s plenty of you who need a support group for drinking water. There is actual science behind the reason as to why your body needs water. Don’t forget the fact that the human body is basically made up of like… I don’t know… like 65% of water. Enough water in the system also equals better skin and less acne. So, if you don’t like plain water, add things that will make it much enjoyable to drink. Problem solved.

Once I began detoxing, I got so bored with my food and drinks, all I could think about was quitting. Sure enough, I talked to my holistic doctor and did my own research on the side. Eventually, I actually started enjoying my detox. Not only that, I saw the improvement it made on my skin and overall health. Plus, it was so refreshing that I could enjoy drinking water on top of cleaning my system.

Tips on buying: So, herbs and fruits, let’s talk about them. Below I typed a list, but please keep reading before looking at that list. Only use fruits that are in season. Why? This is because fruits that are out of season tend to be pricier. But, the most important part, out of season usually means it’s not organic. Organic is best. Trust me! Ever tried small organic strawberries vs big booty fake ass Kim Kardashian strawberries? Um, no thanks. Close your eyes and really listen to you taste buds. They deserve the best of the best in this ugly world. Treat them with respect and they’ll show you how to fall in love with the right food. If you don’t believe me, I double dare you to go out and try it.

Below is a list of detox waters. Next to them I put why people use them the most for, but can be used even if that’s not the purpose. Basically, the strongest detox drinks are anything that have cucumbers, lemon, lime, grapefruit, or apple involved.

How to use: So, here’s what’s so cool about these instructions. There are none! Use as much of anything or use less of this and that. The more there is of anything specific, the more flavor. Subtracting and adding is totally up to you. But, when it comes to lemon, lime, grapefruit or anything on the acidic side I always use less. It all really depends on how much you are making. I prefer using mason jars to brew, then transfer it to whatever if I’m on the go. It’s really easy to prepare, just grab fruits and herbs of choice, put them inside the container, use filtered water, and stick it in the refrigerator overnight.

Tips: I’ll tell you a secret, there’s like a million different combinations of fruits and herbs infused detox drinks out there. Never be afraid to experiment on your own as long as you know there’s a balance of tastes going on. Any fruit that can be thought of can be used. There is no fail, but if the water is too acidic for you, just add more water. Before I put my infused water in the refrigerator, I like to leave it out in a sunny area for 2-3 hours so the sun can naturally brew it. After that, I just stick it in the refrigerator from about 4 hours to overnight. So refreshing to drink when it’s cold. Yes, you can add honey as a sweetener, but only to the non-detox drinks. Some people like to use coconut water or sparkling water. As for using lavender or similar messy ingredients, just use a coffee filter and yarn to wrap it up inside.

For sparkling water: Sparkling water is a bit tricky because the sparkling water only last for at least a day. So, there are two ways to doing this. One, put the fruits and herbs to brew for 3 hours. Bam, it’s ready. Or two, put the fruits and herbs in the container, add a little bit of water. Then brew. After the water has brewed overnight, add as much sparkling water as you want the next day. This way the water soaks up all of the nutrients from the fruits and herbs.

Turmeric face mask

Turmeric face mask

A face mask most people aren’t aware of is the turmeric face mask. Turmeric is a well-known spice used in the Middle Eastern and Southeast Asia usually well-known for its flavor and fantastic health benefits. The mask is very easy to make; however, it can get messy. Yes, you will look like a Simpsons character, but only for 10-15 minutes. Yes, it might stain your clothes if you aren’t careful. So, wear clothes you don’t really care about when you want to use this mask. Things will go much better if you buy a make-up brush because the turmeric will stain your hands.

Turmeric is a spice used in the Middle Eastern and Southeast Asia that looks similar to the ginger root. This is because it’s actually the cousin of the ginger, aka fam or family. People use it for either adding flavor to food or helping other people achieve better looking skin. Anyone suffering from acne, eczema, and other skin conditions should really consider this mask. People even use it for skin rejuvenation, since it gives instant skin glow, removes dead skin cells, and removes dark spots. Turmeric is also known to treat depression, which I explained in my last post. One more thing, turmeric is also known for working as a hair remover and yes, I will talk about that later.

When I began using this mask, I was a bit hesitant. But, the next day when I woke up, my skin felt better. Even better, after two weeks of using this mask, I saw an overall satisfactory improvement in my skin. Also, being a hispanic woman usually means, peach fuzz. Ew. Even the extra peach fuzz hair I disliked began disappearing. I totes love it!

Where can I find it?: Easy. Winco. You know, in the bulk foods department where you can find spices near the grains and candy. Any store that sells spices from India should supply it, but make sure to ask if it’s edible as well. Some people sell cheap turmeric used for dyeing, and that usually stains the face even more.  Another place to look into is Amazon. (Oh my gosh, delivered to your door. Yay.)

  • Turmeric powder
  • Water or Yogurt or Milk
  • Honey (optional)
  • Sandalwood (optional for acne)
  • Coconut oil (oily skin)
  • Sesame oil (skin inflammation)

How to use: I like to use a small plastic cup. Any small bowl will work just fine as long as it’s dark-colored. I usually pour about 2 teaspoons of turmeric into bowl and mix it with warm water until it turns into a paste. Instead of using my hands, I use a foundation brush. Sometimes, I use yogurt instead of water. Honey is also a great combination to add for better looking skin. For people with bad acne, sandalwood should be added. People with oily skin can add coconut oil. Anyone suffering from skin problems like eczema or any inflammation should add sesame oil.

Tips: A fair warning, avoid the eyebrows. So, the eyebrows and hairline should be avoided or else you’ll end up with less eyebrow hair. Boo. I usually get a cheap foundation brush to do the trick. If you have very sensitive skin, just go to target or something for a foundation brush. Heck, even a paint brush will work. The timing for this mask is anywhere from 10-15 minutes. Yes, it will stain your face… that’s if you don’t wash it right. I usually use any make-up remover products or a bit of baking soda with warm water. A facial toner will also do the job.

Have a sore throat?

Most people have busy lives and little time to prepare drinks that will help them soothe a sore throat. That usually ends up with the horrible idea of carrying around easy things like cough drops, which only soothe the throat momentarily. Most people don’t know that most restaurants tend to have all of the ingredients that will help soothe a sore throat. People also have little knowledge of how easy they are to find or carry around. Also, the last thing someone should dare to do is drink anything cold or iced.

I’ll repeat it again. It is vital to remember that when there’s a sore throat involved, nothing cold should be consumed during that time. It’s kind of like scraping your knee, then having someone with a flu cough on it. Yup, completely pointless. But, I see people drink iced or cold drinks when they have a sore throat only to complain later on about how much their throat burns. I have to deal with listening to the same people whine about how it’s been a week, and how they still have a sore throat. Listen and learn, because that will only prolong the process of healing.

Having hot water with lemon/lime is always good for you because warm water with lemon/lime always soothes and aids the digestive system. Honey adds flavor and carries all of the good benefits people need to soothe a sore throat. This will make the healing process for a sore throat go by way faster. If you don’t believe it, test it out.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Lemon/lime
  • Honey
  • Hot or room-temperature water

Tips: What if there’s no available honey? What if there’s no hot water? Bummer, but guess what? Lemon/lime with warm water will do just fine. When I have a sore throat I like to carry around cut lemons/lime in a Ziploc bag. Also, every time I go to Starbucks, I grab a few honey packets for emergency days like these. I’ll explain later why it’s very beneficial to drink water with lemon/lime throughout the day.

Still got the flu?

$_1-2  Okay, so maybe you still have the flu and want to try something new other than garlic and onion? Or maybe you just want to add-on to the last tea. My boyfriend recently fought off the beginning of what could have been a horrible flu within 2-3 days. What? Yes. Fall is here, the weather is changing for reals this time, and people are beginning to get sick. It’s no joke that it’s irritable throat and stuffy nose season. I got chu. I found out about this new tea through my holistic doctor not long ago.  This tea does not smell like roses, but if you cover that nose, everything’s going to be alright. Sometimes, odor and taste don’t equal the same thing. Plus, I added on other things to make the smell and taste much more pleasant. Maybe, that will make you feel better.

Turmeric is a spice used in the Middle Eastern and Southeast Asia that looks similar to the ginger root. This is because it’s actually the cousin of the ginger, aka fam or family. People use it for either adding flavor to food or helping other people with certain health problems. Turmeric is also known to treat depression

Here’s the recipe:

  • Turmeric powder
  • Ginger
  • Black pepper
  • Vanilla extract (pure, none of that fake shit)
  • Honey
  • Cinnamon
  • Coconut, Cashew, or Almond milk

Tips: Um, what about moo milk (dairy milk)? Okay, yeah. Do what you want, I guess I can’t judge anyone. But, it is best if it is avoided as the other non-moo milk will work better at making that terrible flu go away.

How to use: First, grab a cup, a spoon, and a teaspoon measuring thingy. Boil choice of milk at medium heat. At the beginning of the heating process, do the following. Grab a small pinch of pepper and drop it inside the milk. Now, grab a teaspoon of turmeric and half of an inch of ginger root (or a teaspoon of ginger) to also drop into the milk. Finally, add a small dash of vanilla. Concentrate and keep stirring milk until it starts to boil. Once everything looks well mixed, pour the milk into a cup. Add as much honey as desired. For a final touch, dash some cinnamon on top and enjoy. Soon you’ll see it’s actually kinda tasty, just an interesting taste at first, but tastes pretty good.

Got the flu?

When I was a tiny little one, my grandmother was usually the one who would take care of me. So it only makes sense that I got most of my get-well recipes from her. If I ever ended up with the bad flu, she would prepare me a very distinctive tea. Onion tea. I know, it sounds gross at first. You know what’s gross too? A shot of Fireball. A shot of vodka. Low-class beer. If people can drink those things to catch a good buzz, they can drink this tea. It’s not even bad because the honey completely takes over. So don’t sit there and tell me you’ve changed your mind. At first, I wasn’t a fan of it, but it grew on me once I knew how to prepare it a different way. My boyfriend’s a picky eater and even he enjoyed it.

After a sip or two, it starts to become tasty. If not, just chug it. Shut up, It’s good for you. Maybe things make sense as to why chicken soup makes a person feel better after consuming it because it usually has onion in it. Or any soup with any onion or garlic in it. Of course, the process works much better when someone uses the key ingredients on their own.

The ingredients you’ll need:

  • Garlic
  • Red Onion
  • Cinamon stick
  • Honey
  • Lemon/Lime (both can be used together too)
  • Filtered water

How to use: Boil a cup or two of water. Chop half an onion or maybe even a little bit less for a first timer. The perfect amount would be 1/4 of an onion to be precise, but 1/2 is for those who want a really strong tea. Now peel 2 to 4 cloves of a garlic head. First-timers will probably choose only 2 cloves. Once the water is boiling, put the onion and garlic inside the boiling water. Wait 10 minutes. Let it sit for another 5 minutes. Finally, pour it into a cup and add as much honey as wanted. The lemon/lime is optional. Try it without it first. Go wild.

Tips: So, questions. Why the red onion? A normal onion can be used as well if it’s all there is for the time being. The reason why I suggest a red onion is because red onions contain much more nutrients than the regular ones. What if I only have an onion and no garlic? What if I don’t want to use garlic? As long as onions are being used, the magic will still work. Adding garlic is more like a plus in this case. Also, garlic can be used instead of onion, but most people won’t like the taste of garlic tea. Buying garlic pills is also something I would suggest. They help keep the immune system strong. The honey and lemon/lime will hide the overall taste of garlic and onion. It’s really not bad at all. Even Vampires like me can agree garlic isn’t so bad. Plus, drinking onion tea with honey makes an inflamed throat feel a million times better. Yay!

Onions reduce inflammation, heal infections, have a ton of vitamin C, and help regulate blood sugar. Now, what about garlic? Garlic is family to the onion, that means pretty much the same thing. My holistic doctor suggests Garlic has been known to treat yeast infections and the common cold, quick.

Skip the flu & Clean your system

About 3 years ago, I found out about a drink that works magic on avoiding/getting rid of the flu. It is surprising how fast this drink works. At first, it may feel like an oncoming fever after it is consumed, but that’s just the body doing its work. Take a nap, It’ll help. When people sleep, the body works harder at fighting off infections, with the right help of course. People don’t have to nap/sleep, sometimes it works okay without it. There’ve been days when I’ve woken up with the oncoming flu, made this drink, and felt better after a nap. When I do get sick, I drink this all day for two straight days. By the 2nd or 3rd day, I feel better again. It even works for bad digestion, for those that haven’t gone number 2 all day or in days.

  • Cayenne Pepper
  • Honey (Local is preferred)
  • Lemon/Lime (both can be used too)
  • Filtered Water (never cold)
  • Ginger (Optional)

How to use: I prefer grabbing a filtered water bottle and dumping it into a big cup. (Be sure to only use room temperature water because it works better with your body.) Afterwards, I grab a lime or lemon and squeeze it into the cup. I add as much honey as I want. Finally, with my fingers I sprinkle a bit of cayenne pepper into my cup and stir. Be careful, too much pepper will make the drink spicy and difficult to drink. Sometimes I even add a dice of ginger. In all honesty, it tastes like lemonade with a pinch of spice. Not at all difficult to drink.

Tips: Anyone except babies (literally), can drink this preferably in the morning and throughout the day. It is best to always drink filtered water since the body is going to go through detox and needs all the nutrients it can get. Be sure that the only thing you’re drinking is the detox drink and water when doing so. There is no limit on how many of these, one should drink since this drink will alkaline the body. So yes, it’s completely healthy.
